Do I need to download anything to try it?

Accepted Answer

No. The web app is the full mailbox and works straight away, free, on a domain you already own. The other apps are there when you want them, not before.

Is the free plan limited to one app?

No. Every app and every client works on it, including IMAP from a mail client we've never heard of. The plan changes how many people and domains you get, never which screens you're allowed to read on.

Question 3

Will my old address keep working while I move?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You upload an export of the old mailbox, so nothing is taken out of it and it keeps receiving the whole time. Keep it forwarding for as long as you like and switch over when nothing is arriving there any more.

Question 4

Will the Mac app run on an Intel Mac?

Yes. It's a universal build — one download with both architectures in it, so an Intel Mac and an Apple silicon Mac each run native code from the same file. macOS 11 Big Sur is the oldest version it will start on.

How does the Windows app install?

Accepted Answer

The easiest way is the Microsoft Store: it installs with no warnings and keeps Nyxe up to date. If you'd rather not use the Store, the installer sets it up in a few seconds. It installs just for your account, so there's no admin prompt, and it fetches Microsoft's WebView2 runtime if your PC doesn't have it. Either way Nyxe registers for mailto: and nyxe:// links, and you choose it as your mail app in Windows Settings > Apps > Default apps. There's also a plain .zip if you'd rather unpack it yourself.

Windows says "Windows protected your PC". Is that a problem?

No, and it's worth explaining rather than hiding. That screen only appears for the direct download, because we don't yet pay for a Windows code-signing certificate, so Microsoft's SmartScreen doesn't recognise us as a publisher — it's about our paperwork, not about the file. Click "More info", then "Run anyway". Or get Nyxe from the Microsoft Store instead: Microsoft signs that copy, so it installs with no warning.

Is there a Linux app?

Not packaged yet, though the same shell builds and runs there. In the meantime the web app is a full mailbox on Linux, and any desktop client can connect over IMAP, which is the same mail with your own keyboard shortcuts.
